the latest that gunman's identity. fox 5 midday news starts now. an emotional reunion this morning as two u.s. journalists held captive in north korea arrive home to waiting friends and family. thank now watching fox 5 miday news. i'm holly morris. i'm allison seymour. lauraling and euna lee walked off into the arms of family after six months. sarah simmons joins us now with more on our emotional top story. sarah? >> reporter: the white house says it is enormously pleased with the return of the two american journalists. the two women had been in prison in north korea since march. the return -- they return home to california with former president clinton and spoke just a short time ago. it was the moment the families had been waiting for for

months. lauraling and euna lee returning home after being punished for crossing the border. >> we fear at any moment we could be sent to a hard labor camp. >> reporter: ling says before the two were released yesterday, they were told of a meeting. >> we were taken to a location and when we walked in through the doors, we saw standing before us president bill clinton. >>errmfoformer president's surprise visit likely came ter a deal had already been brothered. some speculate with the high profile visit from clinton really meant for relations between the two countries. >> it is a power move. it is hitting them high. it is showing the north koreans the real benefits of a constructive, normalized relationship with the united states. >> reporter: secretary of state hillary clinton was asked about her husband's visit. she warned the north koreans they won't get anything they want from the united states

until they shut down their nuclear weapons program. >> we've always considered that a totally separate issue from our efforts to reengage the north koreans and have them return to the six-party talks. >> reporter: now president obama made a brief statement outside the white house after their return saying the government was extraordinarily relieved over the release of the two journalists. reports that north korea the former president apologized for may have done but the white house flatly denies that report and says there was no message carried through clinton from the white house. >> sarah simmons, thank now that. to another hot spot where americans are be held. iranian officials are deciding whether to charge three americans with spying. the three crow was hiking to a famous water fall in iraq when they accidentally crossed the border. the secretary of state hillary

clinton has called for their release. we are following breaking news right now. reports of an accident involving a school bus in northern virginia. this happened shortly after 10:30 this morning in vienna near maple avenue west and courthouse road. the bus is a fairfax county school bus. we understand there were some children on the bus and that some are being evaluated at the scene. we don't know how many at this time or where the bus was going. we will of course bring you more information as it comes into us. another big story we're following today. terror out of pennsylvania -- at a pennsylvania health club. a man walked in and fed dozens of shots inside a crowded gym. the scene unfolded at l.a. pittsburgh side f last night. tonight we're learning more about a possible motive. >> reporter: a lone gunman opens fire on a health club. witnesses at the l.a. fitness center in suburban pittsburgh saying a man

carrying a duffel bag walked into a room where an exercise class was taking place, fumbled around for a minute or so and then without warning pulled out two guns and began spraying bullets. the gym wapacked. more than 70 people attempting to take cover. some killed instantly. and others pleading for help. >> i was working out and i heard a bunch ever gunshots and just seen everybody run. >> i helped carry the one girl out. she got shot in her thigh and kept saying she was going to die. >> reporter: the dead included three women and a suspect who apparently turned the gun on himself. investigators are trying to figure out who some of the victims are at this point. >> as you can imagine in a fitness club, they don't have i.d.s on them. we're having trouble identifying some of the people. >> reporter: authorities are refusing to discuss a potential motive for the shootings but witnesses are saying the gunman seemed to know where he was going and who he was targeting. >> one witness says a woman screamed that the shooter was her ex-boyfriend and that he was trying to kill her.

nominee. a vote could happen as early as friday. metro is also a topic on the hill today. the g.m. says more federal funding is needed to keep commuters safe. general manager john catoe pleaded for money to upgrade the system. the house has approved $150 million for the next fiscal year but the senate is still considering the request. overall metro needs about $11 billion over the next ten years, catoe says, for safe and reliable service. >> if we do not receive sufficient funding now, service as well as safety will decline. >> if metro gets its first installment of $150 million, maryland and virginia will all match it. during the height of rush hour monday, metro recved a complaint that a door may have opened on an orange line train. it's out of service right now. this happened as the train moved between the federal center and lafonte plaza stops. nobody was hurt.

it's not clear why the door was open. mayor adrian fenty made good on a promise to change his children's school. he confirmed that his twin boys will attend d.c. public schools but he hasn't said where. reports say it's between aeton -- eaton and several other schools. there's no word on an official decision. west elementary is closest to the fenty's home. the district is expanding its sexually transmitted disease testing program to every high school. the program requires students attend a lecture but they can opt out of providing a urine sample for the test. stds are of particular concern to aids activists because they increase the risk of contracting h.i.v. 13% of about 3,000 students tested positive for an std during the program last year mostly for gonorrhea or chlamydia. the std testing program is one point of progress noted in the new report card on fighting aids and h.i.v.

in the district. the report gives the city a b plus when it comes to overall leaderip of making hiv-aids a top priority. d.c. gets an a when it comes to testing for and tracking the spread of h.i.v. the lowest grade a c plus for public education of aids and h.i.v. congress appears ready to refuel the cash for clunkers program. bill that would pour $2 billion into the program will likely pass in the senate before friday. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle believe they will vote in favor before the summer recess starts. the new money is needed after consumers burned through the first $1 billion budget. the house has already passed the bill. if the senate fails to pass it by friday, the program could come to a screeching halt. the president heads out to push and praise his economic plan today. he heads to indiana with plans to show his stimulus plan is producing results. the area got a big chunk of

nuclear powered russian attack subs but the pentagon says there is no cause for concern. the submarines have been there for several days. they have not seen anything like it since the cold war. a soldier from northern virginia has been killed in afghanistan. 42-year-old sergeant first class of fairfax was killed august 2 when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device. to other soldiers were also killed. all three were members of the mississippi army national guard. a pedestrian has died after being hid by a car on the b.w. parkw. investigators say a man was trying to walk across the northbound lanes just south of 450 around 9:00 last night when he was hit. the car that hit him was going north. the driver stayed on the scene. charges have not been filed. prince george's county police have made an arrest in the quadruple shooting in oxon hill we told you about yesterday. it happened early yesterday

morning. four people were shot on livingston road including two women. one man was killed and another man is in critical condition this day. police say the shooting began with an argument in an apartment stairwell. three teenagers sit in jail. they're charged in burning that football field in millton high school we told you about. all three teens are 17 years old and attend brunswick high school. they burned a huge chunk of the artificial turf saturday. the damage now estimated a ttle over $20,000. an emotional gathering is underway at georgetown university hospital right now. 14 people involved in the largest kidney exchange in one city met just a few minutes ago. last month seven people from the d.c. area got transplants from donors who match close enough to use plasma which lowers a person's antibodies to accept another person's organ. doctors hope the process can help address racial disparities

some of the top stories we're following today. the to american journalists held in north korea for more than four months are back in the united states. lauraling and euna lee reunited with their families in southern california this morning. former president clinton traveled to the communist

country to negotiate their release. ling and lee had been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor for entering into north korea illegally and engaging in hostile acts. the man who went on a shooting amp raj in health club has been identified as a 48- year-old. a website posting under the suspect's name contains rambling messages expressing hatred for women and frustration at being rejected. the shooter only targeted women at the gym hitting ten. three died. then he killed himself. police in montgomery county are trying to track down a thief this morning. they say someone walked into the saks fifth avenue store on wisconsin avenue and walked out with a $2500 chanel dress. but there's one problem. >> investigators aren't sure if they're looking for a man or a woman even though the entire alleged crime was caught on camera. wall pag near explains -- paul wagner explains. >> reporter: just before 8:00 last thursday night, this woman or is it a man?

police aren't absolutely sure -- walked into saks fifth avenue on wisconsin avenue carrying a large bag. >> walks around the store looking to see where the employees are and all. goes into the chanel area where there doesn't appear to be any employees. >> reporter: the detective says security guards in another room used the remote controls on the store's sophisticated surveillance system to zoom in to see what the person was doing. disarming a security device on a very expensive dress. >> if you have some space between it, you know, you can get it apart. whether there was a gap or not, i'm not sure. but it's not easy to pull those apart. >> reporter: detective hill says security guards then watched as the suspect rolled up a chanel knit dress priced at $2400, put it in a large bag and headed for the door. >> when the subject was exiting, they were approached by an officer. shortly after that -- there wasn't a struggle or anything, just conversation and the person -- the lost prevention

maryland, 89 degrees. we need to check that thermometer. 83 patuxent naval air station. going to be out out there. it will be humid up ahead of the front. high temperatures about 90 or so. here's a look at the satellite radar. we have clouds moving in from the west and the light rain shower activity lagging off not too far out into the mountains. again i think we'll see some showers and thunderstorms fire up right along that line. you can see we have more numerous showers into eastern kentucky and west virginia at this point. all of this will push to the south and east. as we get into the nighttime hours tonight, i think we'll have lingering showers and thunderstorms. they might even stick around for the first part of tomorrow. so we're not going to quite get this front out of here till tomorrow afternoon. it will continue to move on towards the washington area. so increase in clouds this afternoon. and it will be summery around here with highs around 90 or so. we'll get the whole thing out of here by friday. we'll have quite the weather to start the weekend. the forecast for today, increase in clouds out there. scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms back in the forecast. high temperature about 90

leaving american idol. she tweeted yesterday she's going to be leaving and missing the show. we're finding out more from our sources from american idol. i guess ol had come forward with an offer for her. she said no. she counteroffered. she came back with a second one. i guess she was really upset about it and she went in and twittered about it. she didn't get back to them. she were shocked. that's how they found out they didn't want to come back to the show. so they put our their official statement saying they're going to miss paula. it's an emotional twitter no one really expected. >> i guess from your sources this is pretty much a done deal? we were thinking well, was it a stunt or another negotiation unt on her part but with the network responding, it seems to give it a little more closure. >> you know what? all signs are pointing owards it being a done deal. if idol wanted her back, she could easily offer up a lot more money. all she was asking was for about $5 million. we hear she makes around $2 million, $3 million. this he wanted to bump up to $5
